As part of its ongoing commitment to support Malaysians throughout the pandemic, Salcon Berhad has provided relief to 100 households in Sandakan.

SANDAKAN, 17th AUGUST 2020Sandakan: The Covid-19 pandemic which resulted in multiple and prolonged lockdowns and various Movement Control Orders (MCO) have left many families around the country in critical financial condition. In support of the white flag (#bendera putih) campaign, Salcon Berhad has fundraised close to RM23,000, by matching every donation from generous Salcon’s employees, which amounted to approximately RM 11,500.

Salcon provided emergency food and assistance to families who are in dire need of help at one of its project sites in Sandakan, Sabah. This initiative was achieved with the collaboration of Mimbar Permuafakatan Ibubapa Malaysia (MAPIM), a local non-governmental organisation (NGO) in Sandakan. Through the partnership with MAPIM, food packages consisting of rice, cooking oil, sugar, flour, milk, salt, noodles, soy sauce, chili sauce, sardines, tea, coffee, and biscuits, were distributed to the struggling families.

General Manager- Corporate of Salcon Berhad, Ms. Chern Meng Gaik said: “Under the “Salcon Cares” community outreach programme, we are proud of our employees who have rallied to the call to assist those in need. We look to help more communities where Salcon is operating in to tide them through this difficult and challenging time.

“We would also like to express our deepest gratitude to our local NGO, MAPIM, which has helped facilitate the food aids distribution” added Ms. Chern.

According to the Chairman of MAPIM Sandakan, Fringco Firdaus Abdullah, more than 210 households in Sandakan have been impacted by the country’s ongoing MCO and it is critical for MAPIM to continue providing food aid to the households, as long as the country is still under MCO. “We are extremely grateful that Salcon Berhad has contributed to our effort and with their help, we are able to extend our help to more households in Sandakan”, said Mr. Fringco.

Salcon’s White Flag project is part of the activities organised by Salcon to support the nationwide White Flag movement which aims to help those in dire need of food and essentials. The movement suggests that those who need assistance fly a white flag or cloth outside their homes, letting those who can help know which households could be facing extreme difficulties.
