Blood Donation

SUBANG JAYA, 27 AUGUST 2020 – Salcon Berhad, a premier water and wastewater engineering company is continuing its annual collaboration with National Blood Centre (PDN) to organise its 11th blood donation drive at Summit USJ Mall today. The campaign is aimed at overcoming the shortage of blood supply nationwide and to generate public awareness about regular blood donation to save lives.

The company successfully capped its one-day blood donation drive with a total of 111 registrations, 71 pints of blood collected from blood donors and potentially save up to 213 lives. One pint of blood can be divided into three primary components which are red cells, platelets and plasma. It is essential for surgeries, cancer treatment, chronic illness and traumatic injuries.

General Manager- Corporate of Salcon Berhad Ms. Chern Meng Gaik said, “The blood donation drive this year is more critical than ever because of the unprecedented medical crisis caused by the COVID-19 pandemic. We answered the call from the National Blood Centre to organize this blood donation campaign as the country blood bank’s stock has decreased by 40% during Movement Control Order (MCO) compared to the same period in earlier years.”

“As a caring corporate citizen, we will continue to do our bit to save lives,” she added.

According to Dr Siti Aisyah Idris from National Blood Centre, average hospitals across the country need about 2,000 to 3,000 units of blood per day for regular usage of patient with on-going conditions to ensure that blood supply is always sufficient due to the increase in the number of patients, development of medical technology and availability of speciality services at hospital nationwide.

“We strongly urge public to make a pledge to donate blood regularly to overcome the shortage of blood supply. Donors should be rest assured that it is safe to donate blood as the healthcare workers are more than capable of ensuring the safety of donors by adhering to the standard operating procedures (SOPs).” Dr Siti Aisyah Idris said

“It is heartening to see Salcon employees and public turning up enthusiastically to support this noble cause. It would not be a shared success without collaborative effort between Salcon and National Blood Centre. We would like to take this opportunity to thank Salcon for their timely support when National Blood Centre are facing a critical shortage of blood. We look forward to the blood donation drive next year with hopes of hitting even higher total blood pint collection,” she added.

Salcon Annual Blood Donation Drive is part of the activities organised by Salcon in conjunction with the one-week Safety and Health Campaign 2020 from 24th -28 August 2020 with the theme “Stop the Pandemic: Safety and Health at work can save lives”.
