Petaling Jaya, 11 May 2019 – Forty (40) secondary students aged between 16 and 17 from Kwang Hua Private High School spent a fun filled day at the beautiful Lembah Kiara Taman Tun Dr. Ismail today during the Salcon Smart Water Programme (SSWP).

The SSWP is an award winning programme organized in collaboration with Water Watch Penang (WWP) and designed to instill awareness amongst our younger generation on the importance of our precious water resources. The programme is carried out on a bi-monthly basis and is part of Salcon Berhad’s continuous effort of cultivating love for our rivers among students via a hands-on approach.

“I personally think the programme is a refreshing experience for the students as they have the opportunity to conduct hands-on activities outside their normal classroom. On top of that, they can apply the knowledge they gained at school to the experiments they conducted today”, said Ms Chong Kuai Hoon, teacher.

The programme encourages students to learn to conduct physical, biological and chemical tests by themselves in order to identify the health of the river. This involves water pH testing, water flow monitoring, water turbidity, dissolved oxygen testing and identifying aquatic organism using water monitoring kits Ms Chern Meng Gaik, General Manager- Corporate of Salcon Berhad said, “We engage with younger generations because the reality is the future of our rivers lie in their hands and their habits. Through this platform, we hope to inculcate in them to care for our precious water resources and eventually be our very own ambassadors to educate their friends and family”.

To date, the programme has benefitted more than 40 schools and 2,700 children and has garnered good support and response from teachers and students.
