Education & Community Development
At Salcon, our flagship Corporate Responsibility programme is the ‘Salcon River & Water Awareness Educational Programme’, which is a collaboration with non-governmental organisation, Water Watch Penang to educate our youths on the importance of water conservation. The programme has bagged 2 awards namely Asia Responsible Entrepreneurship Awards 2013 Southeast Asia – Green Leadership Award and Asia-Pacific Enterprises Leader ship Awards – Educational Service Award.
Other than the River programme, Salcon gives back to the community in many ways, including organising blood donation campaigns, participating in charity runs and cashor donations in kind to the needy from time to time.
Salcon River & Water Awareness Educational Programme
Salcon River & Water Awareness Educational Programme is a Corporate Responsibility Programme organized by Salcon Berhad with the collaboration of non-governmental organisation, Water Watch Penang (WWP) and University Sains Malaysia (USM) since 2010. The objectives of the programme are:
- To increase awareness and education of the importance of river and water amongst youths in Klang Valley via hands-on experience of river water monitoring.
- To inculcate a sense of responsibility amongst school children in terms of the value of water, water use and the commitment to do something to protect water catchments, rivers and water resources, and to change people’s lifestyle from water wasting to water saving.
- To train school teachers to become trainers for the program so that the programme can be more sustainable and reach a bigger crowd of audience and convey the message of water conservation.
It is believed that children tend to absorb the knowledge more efficiently through practical hands-on activities rather than solely theoretical study in the classroom. The activities are designed to train observation skill as well as interactive skill of the children. Throughout the years, more than 600 children have benefited from the programme. Survey result has shown that the participants’ knowledge on water and water conservation has increased by 18% after the programme.
To ensure the sustainability of the programme, Salcon has initiated the first Train-of-Trainers (TOT) Programme in 2013 for the school teachers with the aim to guide and train selected teachers from primary schools in Klang Valley to conduct their own river and water educational programme.
In recognition of the Group’s effort in educating our younger generation on environment conservation and sustainability, the Group was awarded the Green Leadership Award, a regional recognition by Enterprise Asia during the Asia Responsible Entrepreneurship Awards (AREA) 2013. The Salcon River Awareness & Educational programme was also awarded Honorable Mention Award (Educational Service Award category) at the Asia-Pacific Enterprise Leadership Awards (APELA) in 2013.
